SAINT NON (Jean Baptiste Claude Richard) - Voyage pittoresqu - Lot 933
SAINT NON (Jean Baptiste Claude Richard) - Voyage pittoresque de Naples et de Sicile. Paris, De La Fosse, 1782; folio, approx. 500 plates, bound in contemporary livery, unfortunately in fair conditionthe works have been wet some plates are affected by a fungus, there is a very large amount of cleaning, washing and treatment work, as well as freckling on the least affected volumes. All 3 volumes. During his travels, Saint-Non befriended Fragonard and Hubert Robert, and traveled with them from Sicily to Naples. In 1781, he undertook the publication of his trip report in this work illustrated by the best artists of the time: Cochin, Choffard, Fragonard, Guttenberg, Longueil, Marillier, Robert and Châtelet (among others). This publication gives pride of place to the antiquities of Pompeii and Herculaneum, as well as to the Greek ruins of Sicily, but also describes a little of the Puglia region, particularly Brindisi. Some plates reproduce drawings of ancient vases. Our copy contains plate 135 entitled "Phallus ou phallum", which depicts objects found at Herculaneum, and preserved in the Portici museum, which due to censorship is missing from many copies. It is said that the author spent lavishly to produce such a work. The execution of the illustrations shows a love of Italy and the ancient period, which at times shows us the ruins inserted into the landscape can only remind us of Hubert Robert's paintings that evoke the opening of this period towards Romanticism.
