PASCAL (Blaise) - Pensées de M. Pascal sur la religion. Amsterdam, Chez Henri Wetstein, 1699; in-12, 297 + table of contents + 128 pp. + warning, bound in contemporary full calf, smooth spine decorated, edges painted red. Pascal's famous work in defense of Antoine Arnauld and Jansenism, which was struggling against the Jesuits at the time. The struggle resulted in Antoine Arnauld's condemnation for heresy, the banning of Port-Royal and exile for most of its members. This defeat, however, had nothing to do with the strong influence Port-Royal exerted in France and throughout Europe.
