Cologne, Chez Jude Kalcov, 1645; small in-4, 112 pp, bound in full contemporary vellum, smooth spine, edges in speckled leather. Ex-libirs of the Count of Montmarin. The author, Leone Allacci or Leo Allatius in Latin, was born in Greece on the island of Chios, and left Greece for Italy at an early age. There he studied and converted to Catholicism, becoming a Vatican librarian. Although of Orthodox origin, he was ruthless against both Orthodox and Protestants. This text is in fact a refutation of the story of Papess Joan. This edition is given by Barthold Nihus, who has surrounded the text with an introduction, conclusion and new insights.
